SBS 2011 Essentials and Standard

The latest flavour of Windows Small Business Server has been around for a year or so, and people are still a little confused by the different versions of the software:

SBS 2011 Essentials:

Essentials is designed as a first server for small businesses up to 25 users.  It is essentially a “cross premise” product in that it provides all the benefits of the standard version, but without Exchange or Sharepoint. The reason is that you can then facilitate the connection to the cloud with its integration between on-premise and online services. It is essentially a Domain controller, and a file and print server.

SBS 2011 Standard:

Standard is designed for up to 75 users. It includes all of the features of the Essentials server, but also includes Exchange 2010 and Sharepoint Foundation 2010, and Remote Web Access features.

SBS 2011 Premium:

The premium add-on provides a second server license.  This could be used for running another server, maybe a Hyper-V server, a database (LOB) server, another branch server or maybe an additional domain controller.
