Microsoft have killed off Small Business Server (SBS) – but don’t panic!

Microsoft have just release their latest versions of server software, and with particular importance to small businesses is the loss of the “Small Business Server”. SBS was an all-on-one server solution that included all you need to run a business on one server, including a file server, email (Microsoft Excahnge) and Sharepoint.

The replacement product is called “2012 Server Essentials”. It is similar in that it is still a domain controller and file server – but the extras such as MS-Exchange or MS-Sharepoint are hosted in the cloud. As your server is running at a lower load you need less expensive hardware to run it. Essentials 2012 is designed to seamlessly integrate with Microsoft Office 365 and requires a reduced amount of ongoing support.
